The Old Bushmills Distillery - Off Site Maturation Facility

The Old Bushmills Distillery - Off Site Maturation Facility

Description

Client: Old Bushmills Distillery
Project Type: Bulk Excavation & Site Preparation
Site Size: 50 Acres

J&S McKee Ltd was proud to be appointed as the groundworks contractor for the development of a 50-acre greenfield site in County Antrim, set to become the new Off-Site Maturation Facility for the world-renowned Old Bushmills Distillery.

Our role on this project involved transforming the undeveloped land into a fully accessible site, ready for the construction of new whiskey maturation warehouses. The scope of our work included:

  • Full bulk excavation and earthworks across the 50-acre site
  • Formation of a new site entrance and internal roadways
  • Platform construction for the first warehouse building
  • Installation of all associated stormwater drainage infrastructure
  • Development of an on-site rock extraction area to reduce truck movements and environmental impact

Due to the site's proximity to sensitive environmental areas, including waterways draining into the River Bush, strict surface water management protocols were implemented to prevent any contamination from construction activities. Additionally, dust pollution was carefully monitored and mitigated throughout the project duration.

The site presented significant challenges, including steep gradients, poor ground conditions, and exposed rock formations. Despite these obstacles, J&S McKee Ltd delivered all works on time and to the highest environmental and safety standards, ensuring minimal disruption to the local area.

We are proud to have contributed to the expansion of one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic brands and to have successfully handed over a fully prepared site to the Old Bushmills Distillery for the next phase of development.
